National Geographic Magazine has sent me around the world to document enviromental issues, from grizzlies in the Arctic to the jaguars in the Bolivian Amazon. Wherever I go, my camera serves as a witness to both the good and the bad. From country to country, the situations are different but the story is pretty much the same.
The hand of man now reaches out to every corner of the globe. Wildlife and habitats exist only where we allow them. As our cities and towns sprawl out, the amount of wilderness shrinks. It's as simple as that, really. Many species are now at a tipping point and extinction rates are accelerating.
We're all familiar with the images of overpopulation in developing countries - slums filled with houses made from scraps and people packed in shoulder-to-shoulder, scrambling to survive. But now we're starting to feel the pinch here at home. In the American West, people are fighting for energy, we are drilling the last, best places our country has to offer.
When it comes to the environment, there's very little thought given to next year, let alone the next generation. While plants, animals and the health of our planet are a nice notion, to most people they must take a back seat to the business of the day. We live in a hurry-up world these days, where money made and spent right now is what counts the most. We've got things to do and there aren't enough hours in the day as it is. There are just too many important things ahead in the line.
