The Robert J. Dole Institute of Politics and the Dane G. Hansen Memorial Museum are proud to present this behind-the-scenes look at former Senator Bob Dole's private life in the public eye. This exhibit will be on display for two weeks only, April 4 through April 20, 2008. Dole's 35 years in Congress and his Vice-Presidential and Presidential bids have made him a familiar figure to all Americans, and especially to Kansans. The stories about his life that have been presented to the American public represent Dole as Kansas' son, a war hero, a disabled veteran, and a no-nonsense Congressman. Yet that does not tell the whole story. From the young age of 22, when he was wounded while serving in World War II, Dole became a public figure - first locally, and later state and nation wide. He learned to negotiate and keep separate the public and private parts of his life early on, and continued to do so throughout his highly publicized career, numerous campaigns, even Watergate. For the first time, this exhibit will explore the intersection between those private and public aspects, drawing on the resources of his archives in the Dole Institute.

Original papers, artifacts, and photographs will help tell the story by tracing important events in Dole's life. Each of these events, from childhood through adulthood, had an important impact on him as a person or on his career. Visitors will learn about his long and grueling hospitalization after he was wounded in World War II, how an impoverished past lead him to push for reforms in programs like Food Stamps and Social Security, and his continued work to benefit veterans. Insights about his personal life, from the former Senator as well as his family and friends, will provide the most complete look at his long and celebrated life.
