Barbara Schaffner was an honors student at West Texas State University, majoring in fine art and art education. Her western scenes and wildlife paintings have hung in galleries in six western states and Canada. Success has come through numerous shows and top awards and honors including Wyoming Ducks Unlimited Artist of the Year 2003. Barbara can be found at ther studio called “Wyoming Trails Gallery” located at 1004 16th St., Wheatland, WY.

The Dane G. Hansen Memorial Museum takes great pride in bringing Ms. Schaffner to Logan for her 7th year in a row. This dynamic four-day workshop will guide intermediate and advanced artists in a step by step process to complete two paintings. Students will be encouraged to stretch and challenge themselves as they strive for individuality. Each lesson will include discussion of composition, color theory and technique.

Emphasis will be on drawing, sensitivity, and beautiful use of the oil medium. Time will also be set aside for critique. Please bring your own photos to use as a reference.

David Vollbracht of Medicine Lodge, KS, is a representational landscape painter of the west. His work reflects the quality of light, nature and spirit drawn fromk the land. For many years he has made trips to various parts of the west to gather reference material for realistic impressions created primarily in oil. David emphasizes the beauty and importance of the natural landscape in his compositions. He is intrigued by the patterns and shapes in nature and concentrates on the effects of light on these elements.

David’s knowledge has been nurtured by attending the art workshops of Clyde Aspevig and Wayne Wolfe. He has recently recieved Signature Membership to Oil Painters of America. David has shown his work at numerous shows including: Mountain Oyster Club Show, Tucson, AZ, One Man Show Wichita Center for the Arts, Wichita, KS, National Miniature Show, La Luz, NM, National Oil Painters of America Exhibitions and Rocky Mountain Plein Air Show, Winter Park, CO. David has art work currently in the following galleries: Elkhorn Art Gallery, Winter Park, CO and Paint Horse Gallery, Breckenridge, CO.

This class will be on the use of photography as a reference material. Special emphasis will be placed on the limitations of photography and how to use it as a point of reference instead of a crutch.

Design, color, values and composition will be explored as well as the more illusive but just as important elements of mood, passion and attitude that can make a good painting better and a better painting great.

The Dane G. Hansen Muesum is pleased to announce that any quilter who has previously taken or is planning to enroll in the 2008 Quilting Workshop with Janie Lowry is eligible to exhibit one quilt in our gallery March 12 - May 3, 2009. Hundreds of years ago, European princes gratefully received ostrich eggs as precious gifts from explorers returning from Africa. The eggs were prized possessions, often placed in precious pewter frames and used as exotic drinking cups. In creating her “Ostrich Egg” series of assemblages, Florida-based artist Lenne’ Nicklaus-Ball has brought the erstwhile precious object into contemporary art and transformed it into a metaphor for memories of her grandmother. It was an opportune discovery. Nicklaus-Ball had received a collection of jewelry from her late grandmother and was casting about for some way to make use of the jewelry in her art. During a visit to South Africa, she was struck by carved ostrich eggs sold at local flea markets-the eggs were large, thick and full enough to hold full scenes and vibrant decoration. In this circuitous way, Niklaus-Ball found a way to mount patterned jewelry on the eggs, then mount the eggs in various flamboyant settings. The resulting objects are wonderful, poetic memory pieces of the taste, style, flamboyance and flair of a strong young woman.

Marc Sijan’s Superrealistic sculptures are “homages to humanity’s fascination with its own forms - a fascination which has compelled artists throughout the millenia to mirror life in virtually every medium.” Sijan’s figures are incredibly lifelike, sensuous, and graceful. In fact, they are so lifelike, they seem always on the verge of movement, a mere instant away from action. The pores in the skin, the tiny hairs and veins; even the bald spots, the blemished, the individual shapes of the faces that make human beings so similar, yet so unique: These are the essence of what makes Marc Sijan’s work so arresting. Sijan, a Milwaukee-based artist, carries on the tradition of a very old form, but his approach is very modern. His realism recalls the work of the Greek sculptors in its bold expression of human energy and poise. But Sijan is not necessarily celebrating the ideal form. His figures are more gritty, more natural - a tribute to real people. Sijan’s work is similar to that of fellow artists Duane Hansen and John DeAndrea, who use lifelike human figures to express elements of the human condition and human relationships. But whereas his colleagues tend to express a kind of static existence, Sijan tries to capture a life force in full swing.

Sijan’s method is distinct and exacting. First, he works from live models, to produce a negative mold in plaster, and sculpts the interior with special tools and a magnifying glass to assure accurate detail. Then, he casts the figure in a polyester resin. To achieve realistic flesh tones, Sijan applies twenty-five coasts of paint - and adds varnish. Sijan uses oil paint in the final stages of the work.
To achieve the remarkably realistic product , Sijan looks for “variations.” Those are the millions of individual features we all possess - goose bumps, skin imperfections, skin color, sunburn, birthmarks, age spots - and Sijan spends as long as six months reproducing this detail on one piece.

This exhibition of sixty black and white photographs was selected from thousands of portraits shot over a period of more than thirty years by one of the country music’s most celebrated photographers, Jim McGuire. The exhibition reflects a continuing project that commences in 1972 with a portrait of musician John Hartford, and it documents many of the leading figures in the world of country music, from such icons as Bill Monroe, Minnie Pearl, and Lester Flatt to contemporary stars like Emmy Lou Harris, Nanci Griffith, and Marty Stuart. This is an exhibition that will appeal to lovers of country music, Americana, cultural history, and beautiful photography.

We inspire creativity and encourage innovation, and further the rich tradition of the textile arts through publication, exhibitions, conferences, and educational opportunities.

Our organization is a family of dedicated artists and designers who generously share what they make and how they think about what they make. This creates a dynamic, wonderfully colorful, caring atmosphere in which we all continue to learn about the field and its practitioners. Surface Design has expanded into a multi-disciplinary field that encomapsses ancient as well as the most recent technologies. We continue to seek fresh and innovative ways to help one another express what is in our minds and hearts.

Although Bob Ross died in 1995, his “Joy of Painting” still lives on in workshops across the U.S. The Bob Ross style painting classes bring confidence, pride & joy to students who never dreamed they could paint. Although not considered fine art, these classes encourage people to paint, to laugh, to feel a sense of accomplishment, to believe in themselves and to realize “you can do it”.

Sandy Seamone & T.R. Mathews have been Bob Ross painting instructors for the past 18 years. After teaching in Logan for over a decade, they have come to know and love residents and fellow painters in our area. Based out of Arriba, Colorado, Sandy & T.R. travel to cities in Kansas such as Topeka, Manhattan, Deerfield and Logan. Casper and Cheyenne, Wyoming are also along their regular teaching route.
